    Liz Murray Scholarship Fund

    HHBC Student Athlete Program

Hood Hargett Breakfast Club Student Athlete Program renamed “Liz Murray Scholarship Fund” in honor of the woman who went from “Homeless to Harvard”

April 13, 2007, is a day that those who were lucky enough to attend the April Hood Hargett Breakfast Club Meeting will never forget. Speaker Liz Murray, whose story of triumph over adversity earned two standing ovations from her audience that day, also inspired company owner and Fund founder Chuck Hood to rename – on the spot! – the Hood Hargett Breakfast Club Student Athlete Program to the Liz Murray Scholarship Fund.

    (Read Liz Murray's amazing story.)

“Liz’s story was so inspirational, so motivational, so much what our Student Athlete Program is about, I just knew it was the right thing to do,”
    Hood says.

Established to recognize local students who distinguish themselves on the playing field, in the classroom and in the community, the fund has, to date, awarded more than $175,000 to some 150 local high school students to further their education through the Hood Hargett organization.

How the Liz Murray Scholarship Fund works

Each month during the school year (September through May), HHBC awards a $1,000 scholarship to the Liz Murray Scholarship Fund winner at its monthly Breakfast meeting, held at Carmel Country Club. That month’s winner is invited to be a part of this Breakfast, where they are introduced and recognized from the podium before being invited to sit with the guest speaker at the head table. The student’s parents, high school principal and coach are also invited and encouraged to attend.

One of the nine Fund winners is further recognized each year as the Liz Murray Scholarship Fund Student Athlete of the Year, winning an additional $ 5,000 scholarship.

Applicants for the Liz Murray Scholarship Fund come from a number of sources, including nominations by:

    • high school coaches
    • principals
    • community leaders
    • business executives

Selection of the Liz Murray Scholarship Fund winner is determined by a group of business owners who are not members of the Hood Hargett Breakfast Club.
